摘要

Sediment is a word derived from the Latin sedimentum, which means "a settling." Krynine (1960) wrote a nice paper entitled On the Antiquity of Sedimentation and Hydrology. The ancient Greek philosophers held very modern views on sedimentation. Plato even produced truly post-Huttonian descriptions of erosion and deposition around Athens, and he also brought forth, the correct, pluvial, theory for the origin of springs and rivers (Krynine, 1960).
