The writers appreciate the careful evaluation of the paper by the discussers. In our experiments, careful consideration was made to manually achieve a homogeneous bed. During the addition of water in the clay-sand dry mix, it was found that a substantial number of small nodules of dry clay-sand particles surrounded by a wet clay layer were formed within the sediment-water mix. To crush those nodules of clay and achieve a homogeneous mixture of clay-sand-water, the wet mixture was forced to pass through a 5-mm sieve net. A continuous force was applied by hand to push the mixture through the sieve and achieve greater homogeneity. Molinas and Hosny (1999) reported a similar procedure for achieving homogeneity of the clay-sand-water mixture in their experiments.
