The writers are grateful for the knowledgeable and pertinent contributions made by the discussers. It is encouraging that people with such a depth of experience should devote their time so generously. It is also encouraging that they share our desire to enhance clarity for the wider community. Their contributions certainly do this and we hope that our response continues the process. First, it is important to emphasize that the discussers' comments relate primarily to the second step in the approximation of weighting functions (whether Zielke's or others), whereas the original paper relates primarily to the first step. This distinction is important because the second step is commonly approximated well in the literature, but the first is not. This is the issue raised in the introduction of the original paper, culminating in the specific statement at the bottom of page 453. Fig. 2 of the original paper and the related discussion thereof demonstrated this point.
