NEW YORK CITY TAKES ON BACKLOG OF PUBLIC HOUSING REPAIRS

On January 31, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Chairman John Rhea announced a new system to clear the backlog of repair orders in public housing buildings. They plan to have the 420,000 surfeit of requests down to 50,000 by next January, using $40 million in administrative savings. Some public housing residents have waited years for their repairs, but the new system hopes to expedite the process by ensuring the correct type of maintenance worker is assigned to jobs in the correct order. NYCHA will also require quarterly status updates online.
