Design Thinking (Library Future Series, Book 4)

What is Design Thinking? This pocket size book is one of a series entitled Library Futures. The answer to this question is not an easy one; however, the author makes a valiant effort to answer this question, first by defining the concept and then by relating it to librarians and librarianship. The core values of librarianship are Access, Confidentiality/Privacy, Democracy, Diversity, Education/Life Long Learning, The Public Good, Preservation, Professionalism, Service, Social Responsibility and Sustainability To these ends, libraries and librarians are highly educated planners and executers of plans. This is the basis of library education and practice. The author illustrates that design thinking is a necessary addition to this process and must be added to library education and practice. Broadly defined, design thinking is an approach to problem solving that is empathetic and having a deeper understanding of user needs and the users themselves. As problems are defined the librarian would then prototype solutions and study possible results of various prototypes and make modifications to resources and services to fit users and their needs.
