摘要

Brazil's Living Museum provides a nuanced historical analysis of the ways regional identity was crafted over several decades between the late 1800s and the middle part of the twentieth century in Brazil's northeastern state of Bahia. Romo's objective throughout the book is to understand how, as Afro-Brazilian 'culture' became increasingly valuable to Bahian and Brazilian national identity, Afro-Brazilians themselves remained largely excluded from 'modernizing' democratic and social reform measures.
