Elisabeth Oxfeldt, Journeys from Scandinavia: Travelogues of Africa, Asia, and South America 1840—2000.

Following her Nordic Orientalism: Paris and the Cosmopolitan Imagination 1800-1900 (2005) Elisabeth Oxfeldt, associate professor at the University of Oslo, broadens the geographical and chronological range of her studies to consider how Scandinavians perceived and portrayed encounters with the non-European Other in Africa, Asia, and South America from 1840 to 2000. She asks where, as small, non-imperial nations on the periphery of Europe, Danes and Norwegians fit into the 'imperial' and 'Other' binary. Scandinavian travel writing is underexplored in the critical literature which is dominated by the experience of Europe's most powerful and imperially successful nations.
