摘要

Whilst there have been various studies of national and local science and scientific culture, there are fewer regional analyses. However, the subject has attracted renewed attention recently. John Pick-stone's 'The History of Science and Technology in the North West', Manchester Region History Review 18 (Manchester Metropolitan University, 2007) and Peter Jones' Industrial Enlightenment: Science, Technology and Culture in Birmingham and the West Midlands, 1760-1820 (Manchester University Press, 2009) are two stimulating examples, although the former is an edited essay collection spanning four centuries whilst the latter focuses upon the interface between science and industrialisation in the Birmingham area rather than science and scientific culture per se.
