Knowing Global Environments: New Historical Perspectives on the Field Sciences

This collection of essays was the product of a conference held in 2007 in honour of the work of Robert E. Kohler, the author of works on the history of the field sciences. In particular he, along with Henrika Kuklick, co-edited the 1996 Osiris volume, Science in the Field, the publication of which marked a defining moment in the study of fieldwork. Since Science in the Field was published the study of the field sciences has grown from a fringe concern in the history of science to being one of the most popular areas of study. Knowing Global Environments marks the fifteenth anniversary of the publication of its predecessor, reviews the trajectory of scholarship since the mid-1990s, and considers what current and future questions remain to be tackled. These matters are addressed most explicitly by the book's editor, Jeremy Vetter, and by Robert Kohler himself, who provides the final chapter of the book.
