摘要

When I was collecting my PhD dissertation data in southeast Texas, I experienced a phenomenon known as 'last chance tourism'. Specifically, three features of the phenomenon stood out to me and, coincidentally, this book delineates last chance tourism in precisely the same way. First, tourists flocked to the area to view a highly endangered bird, the whooping crane, in its natural habitat. This book refers to this as disappearing landscapes/seascapes and vanishing fauna. Secondly, fishing guides promoted local folklore about the region's tarpon, a highly endangered species of fish that had gained increasing fame since their migration out of the area beginning in the 1950s.
