Amendments to the IMDG Code: Part Ⅰ

In the first of the two part series which appear in this issue, Andy Altemos presents changes to the 2004 edition of the IMDG Code which has a mandatory compliance date of January 1, 2006, with voluntary compliance authorized January 1, 2005. Changes to the code are many and important. Among subjects covered in the new provisions are: security provisions, bulk containers, transport of solids in portable tanks, infectious substances and genetically modified organisms, classification based on corrosivity to metals, and packaging requirement for liquids and solids. Mr Altemos also reviews some of the more important changes to the Dangerous Goods List and associated Special Provisions, made to align with the corresponding provisions in the current UN Model Regulation. He also updates readers with respect to the current IMO position on moving to a UN criteria-based system.
