The authors present a description of a method of analysis of piers in expansive soils. The design procedure and associated finite-element code purport to analyze complex conditions not addressed by conventional rigid or elastic pier analyses. The implication is that, to properly design the piers, one should follow the procedure outlined in the paper. The paper appears to be an extension of numerous papers previously published by Nelson et al.
