The deformation and degradation characteristics of aggregates have long been accepted as very important attributes in determining their selection as railroad ballast and as such have in the last two to three decades been the center of much research effort by various universities worldwide in evaluating these characteristics through model and full-scale laboratory studies as well as field studies.
