Can Neuropsychological Assessment Inform Forensic Evaluators' Psycholegal Opinions? Evidence Through a Case Report

Though competence to stand trial (CST) is a legal construct, demonstration of competence intrinsically relies on cognitive and interpersonal skills. In light of research suggesting forensic evaluators are less likely to attend to cognitive impairment than other factors (e.g., psychopathology), consulting with neuropsychologists can help when formulating psycholegal opinions. For example, neuropsychologists can provide insights about an individual's cognitive strengths and weaknesses, offer opinions about restorability, and make recommendations about strategies for optimizing restoration efforts.
