摘要

A study of ion implantation in poly crystalline alumina has been undertaken aimed at two principal areas. Firstly the measurement of the evolution of mechanical properties in the treated surface, such as hardness and fracture toughness, was undertaken using a Vickers indentation method. These properties are very sensitive to the presence of residual stresses and to the surface microstructure. Secondly a physicochemical study of the treated surface using XRD and SEM techniques in order to identify the parameters that influence the mechanical changes was undertaken.
