NATIONAL SYSTEM FOR TRAINING IN RISK PERCEPTION AND RISK COMMUNICATION ON EMF EXPOSURE

Requests for information on the possible adverse health effects of electromagnetic radiation, addressed by citizens to media and state authorities, are getting more and more frequent. Headache, sleep disturbances, nervous stress, cardiovascular complaints are attributed to an emitting radio-frequency (RF) antenna, power line, transformer station, mobile telephone base station and others, installed near residential buildings or on their rooftops. Most of these cases are treated for central and vegetative nervous system disorders or diagnosed as psychic diseases without paying special attention to the real problem. At the same time, the mobile telephone operators as well as the companies ensuring the network power supply take advantage of population poverty, contracting to mount emitting devices in residential buildings for a minimal rent. The official regulations are not observed and the respective control bodies of the Ministries of Health and Environment often do not exert control over these installations. Instead of providing adequate information, the media publish unconfirmed and often tendentiously misinterpreted information, announcing that the mobile telephones can prevent the brain tumors' development or that the electromagnetic fields (EMF) provide treatment for all diseases and vice versa that the latter are the main cause for cancer development.
