DEVELOPMENT OF GREEK FORESTRY IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE EUROPEAN UNION POLICIES

Since the early 1960's, the European Economic Community (EEC) has developed a series of actions and measures incorporated within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) regarding forestry. More specifically, after 1986 and despite the various legal and political obstacles that emerged, these actions and measures have significantly increased. In addition, the important changes that have taken place in recent years in the countryside areas of the European Union (EU), the successive CAP reforms, along with the new rural development policy, have underlined the multi-functional contribution of forests to rural development. Forestry in Greece, in spite of its limited funding, is a vital sector involving the production of goods and services and contributes to the protection and enhancement of mountainous areas mainly and of the countryside in general. The accession of Greece to the EU, and more significantly its inclusion in the CAP framework, has provided funding for various actions that promote the multi-functional role of its forests.
