UTILISATION OF ASHES AND SLAGS FROM THERMAL POWER PLANTS

Utilisation of the solid wastes from thermal power stations, using coals, is a global problem, because of large unused quantities generated and problems with land area for depots. In Bulgaria the problem is even more difficult, due to the high content of mineral components in the lignite coals widely used. As a result huge amounts of ashes and slags are deposited. Although disposal is not considered as an effective utilisation practice, it still remains the most widespread. On the basis of the waste properties studies (content of non-toxic, inert, containing nutrient elements) the wastes should be classified and pre-treatment and utilisation methods have to be selected. The best available techniques for use of such wastes in the building industry, agriculture, land reclamation, waste water treatment, etc. are discussed and measures for implementation of the new EU directive in this area are proposed.
