STUDY OF HEAVY METALS AND ORGANIC POLLUTANTS IN SOME FISHES OF THE DANUBE RIVER

This work presents aspects regarding the pollution with heavy metals and pesticides of 7 fish species from the Danube river: Acipenser stellatus, Carassius auratus, Percafluviatilis, Alosa pontica, Cyprinus carpio, Abramis brama and Esox lucius. The heavy metals concentrations (Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb) were determined with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer Shimadzu AA-6300 (air/ acetylene flame) and the pesticide concentrations (lindane, DDE, DDD and DDT) were determined with a Fisons gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detection (ECD). The results indicate that Cu, Pb, lindane and DDT in water and fish samples from Galati are in higher concentrations than in the samples from Tulcea. Therefore, more elevated concentrations of lindane were found in Alosa pontica and Cyprinus carpio. In Alosa pontica was found the highest concentration of DDT and also the highest concentration of Pb and of Cu, over the maximum limits accepted. We remarked a strong capacity of Alosa pontica and Cyprinus carpio to concentrate the pollutants from water, probably because these fish species have more lipids than the other ones analysed.
