A hydroponics culture experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of goethite on cadmium (Cd) uptake by and translocation within Iris pseudacorus L. seedlings. The plant root contained higher Cd concentration by comparison with root surface and shoot with/without goethite. Cd concentration in the plant was significantly reduced in the presence of goethite. Cadmium concentration in root surface, root and shoot was, respectively, reduced by 61.26, 57.91 and 66.75% under 1.0 mg/l Cd treatment and 59.25, 58.76 and 30.68% under 0.1mg/l Cd treatment. In addition, Cd content in the whole plant was, respectively, reduced by 66.82 and 55.89% under 1.0 mg/l and 0.1 mg/l Cd treatment. Analysis of Cd distribution in plant different components showed that root contained more Cd than root surface and shoot under 1.0 and 0.1 mg/l Cd solution. In the presence of goethite, shoot became the main contributor to absorb Cd in comparison with root in 0.1 mg/l Cd solution. The results suggested that the root tissue by comparison with the shoot and root surface was the main barrier to Cd uptake by and translocation within /. pseudacorus seedling plant with/without goethite. Goethite showed a perfect effect on reducing/removing Cd in the plant and solution.
