STUDY ON CONTAMINATION OF SNAIL SOFT TISSUES {Helix pomatia) WITH CADMIUM IN SIBIU COUNTY, ROMANIA

Considering that snails can be used as bioindicator organisms, the paper presents a study on species Helix pomatia collected from different areas of Sibiu County in order to give an overview of environmental pollution with cadmium. The researches were carried out in the main areas of natural and homogenous development of snail populations and brings information on the effects of soil pollution on its biocenosis. The snails were collected from 25 sites and the concentration of cadmium in the soft tissues was determined. The results showed that the average content of cadmium in soft tissues on snails from Sibiu County is around 1.062 mg/kg. The highest concentration of cadmium was found in samples collected from Medias village (2.596 and 2.441 mg/kg), located close to Copsa Mica, a town considered once the highest source of anthropogenic pollution from Romania. These findings revealed that the soil is still contaminated with cadmium even if polluting activities were stopped for a long time.
