ABUNDANCE AND DISTRIBUTION OF STURGEON BYCATCH (Acipenser AND Huso) ON THE SOUTHERN BLACK SEA COASTS

This study provides information about the current state of by-catch for three sturgeon species (Acipenser stellatus, Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, Huso huso) at the beginning of the 21 st century along the Black Sea coasts of Turkey. Mainly covering the period between 2005 and 2009, it reports on the frequency and the distribution of accidently caught sturgeon with different commercial gear types. Evidence is provided that still spawners migrated sporadically in the rivers Yesilirmak and Sakarya. The alarming findings on the low abundance of the species in coastal Turkish waters underline the urgent need to develop a strategic plan for the rehabilitation of the populations. It can be achieved by improving habitat and migration routes in Turkish rivers. This is critical for the protection and recovery of the remaining population.
