Contested Common Land: Environmental Governance Past and Present

This book is the product of a project funded by the AHRC as part of its Landscape and Environment Programme 2007-10. It provides an engaging and scholarly analysis of commons management since circa 1600, drawing on four case studies to contextualise this broader legal, historical and environmental research. The four sites are each in their own way, as the authors suggest, 'unique'. They are Eskdale in Cumbria, Ingleborough and Scales Moor in North Yorkshire and the Elan Valley, Powys, all selected to represent upland commons, with Brancaster and Thornham in Norfolk chosen to represent surviving common land in low-land England.
