Although not immediately obvious, through its title, Public Participation andnSustainability Science — A Handbook focuses on the problem of climate changenas one of the many challenges of sustainability. Sustainability science is describedn(Chapter 1) as an “emerging field” which combines work in both environmentalnscience and in economic, social and development studies. In order for sustainabilitynscience to succeed we are told that there is a need for increased public participationnwithin discussions and debates, such as those relating to climate policy. Annissue that has become quite topical of late. Not only is public participationnconsidered important, but the use of computer modelling is also considered necessary.nThe ability to produce scientific models in consultation with stakeholders andnthe public, so that they can be easily accessed and understood, is highlightednwithin this book as being necessary so that democratic processes can take place.
