This important book presents a collection of essays and ethnographic case studiesnon a subject of great importance to practitioners and theoreticians of environmentalnmanagement. It addresses the issue of indigenous minorities’ claims to land andnresources in a non-Western context, and the difficulties of gaining recognition asnstakeholders and legitimate claimants on their own cultural terms. Although focusednon case studies from Malaysia and Indonesia, these explorations, by Zerner and hisncolleagues, of more appropriate ways for approaching the “question of rights”, arenrelevant to everyone concerned to give cultural and social dimensions their propernplace in environmental impact assessment and management.
