Utilizing the characteristics of high efficiency and quick response of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), the issues of grid connected wind power generating system (WPGS), like load leveling, voltage instability and power fluctuation can be solved. In this paper, SMES is used to improve the power quality of doubly- fed induction generator (DFIG) based WPGS by mitigating the output power fluctuation. Two cases have been considered by connecting SMES in two different locations in a WPGS integrated grid. In the first case, SMES through a Type-D chopper is connected with the dc side of the conversion system of DFIG. In the second case, SMES is connected at the point of common coupling (PCC). According to the control objectives, SMES in both cases contributes to the stability and reliability of the grid. Using MATLAB/ Simulink, these two models are established, simulated and compared to realize the better location of SMES for effective performance.
