JVC Hopes Large-Screen POP TVs Catch Viewers Eyes Worldwide

Many of the leading manufacturers of plasma display panels (PDPs) are Japanese companies. Therefore, marketing of these products has concentrated first on Japan. Now, though, consumer demand is growing, especially for PDP TVs. As a result, the Japanese companies are revving up their PDP marketing campaigns for regions outside Japan. Among them is Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC), which has been shipping 35-inch and 42-inch PDP TVs within Japan. In April, the company began addressing other markets. Since then, it has concentrated on selling 42-inch PDP TVs in Europe. These sets come from JVC's plant in England, which imports the panels from Japan, then fabricates the remainder of the TV. The resulting products reach all European markets through JVC's sales companies there. So far, JVC has not sold PDP TVs in the United States. Instead, it has focused on marketing a 48-inch rear-projection TV that works with high-definition TV (HDTV) signals. However, the company plans to introduce a 50-inch PDP TV soon in the United States.
