Sanyo Seeks Global Repeat of Its PDP TV Success in Japan

Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. last summer introduced the VIZON series high-definition PDP TVs in the Japanese market. The VIZON series includes five models that come in seven versions, ranging from 32-inch to 50-inch. Featuring a thin design, available in a variety of colors, high picture quality and high temperature characteristics, the VIZON series PDP TVs have received very favorable reviews. In Japan, Sanyo Electric offers PDP TVs with high-definition digital tuners incorporated in the displays as a basic feature. Everywhere else, the company offers panels and tuners separately. For overseas markets, Sanyo currently offers 32-inch and 42-inch monitors but the company plans to introduce new products in the second half of this year. The VIZON series PDP TVs for the Japanese market feature panels with 1,024 vertical lines (42-inch and 32-inch models). They process and reproduce high-definition images of HDTV since they do not have thinning vertical signals, according to Takeru Maeda, Vice President, AV Solutions Company, Consumer Group. Sanyo Electric predicts the Japanese PDF market combining monitors and TVs will increase 50 percent from 2002 to about 350,000 units this year.
