In the mobile phone market, competition in product development focuses on three areas of technology. These are technologies related to moving pictures, those related to mega-pixel camera functions, and those related to quarter-VGA LCDs. Network service carriers in Japan are each using new models to expand their share of the market, which as of last December came to 73.51 million mobile phones in Japan. After J-Phone Co., Ltd. brought out its J-Phone Sha-mail (picture messaging) mobile phones with built-in cameras, KDDI Corp.'s "au" and NTT DoCoMo followed suit with its own mobile phones featuring built-in cameras. Today, most new mobile phones come with camera functions. Picture quality has advanced from 110,000 pixels to 330,000 pixels. Models that incorporate 1 million or more pixels should start appearing on the market this year.
