FY2002 Provides Nice Surprise for Pioneer in Car A/V Aftermarket

In the robust market for car audio-video (A/V) equipment, Pioneer Corp. continues to perform well. The company has the top share of the global aftermarket for car A/V equipment. In Japan, the company has a strong market position. It has, for example, a significant share of the Japanese market for electronic-map-for-mat car navigation systems. Meanwhile, in markets outside Japan, where car audio equipment still forms the mainstream of the market, the company continues to gain a greater share of the overall car A/V equipment market. Reflecting on the results in FY2002, Tamihiko Sudo, Senior Executive Officer and President of Pioneer's Mobile Entertainment Co, says it was the first good year the company has had in some time. Pioneer did especially well in the first quarter of FY2002. Strong growth in that quarter in the car A/V field gave the entire company a momentum boost. The company reduced deliveries in the second half of FY2001 as the company anticipated lower sales on account of terrorist attacks. However, as it turned out, the company had strong sales all the way through Christmas. Those Christmas sales went better than expected, says Sudo.
