In the race to control the market for 40-inch and larger flat screen TVs, thin-film transistor LCD (TFT LCD) technology has improved, even threatening the foothold of plasma display panels (PDPs). However, LCDs still face the issue of matching, or at least getting closer to, the brightness and contrast ratio of the PDPs. In the rapid shift to the so-called third generation (3G) and even to 3.5G mobile communications networks, users and handset vendors have been calling for great improvements in mobile screen display technologies. The goal is to have sufficient brightness and clarity to render fast-moving images without compromising the battery life. This places tough requirements on TFT LCDs, but engineers are racing to accomplish the task, because one out of every two mobile phones now adopts a TFT LCD for the main display. With this demand comes the rise of technologies and solutions that promise crisper, brighter and more affordable displays.
