The market continues to witness the birth of TVs with larger and thinner screens as the shift from cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs to flat panel display (FPD) TVs accelerates further. It is projected that by the end of 2008, about 100 million units, or nearly half of the total TV demand of 220 million units, will be FPD TVs. Of which, 50 million units are expected to be large-screen TVs of 37-inch or larger. Given these circumstances, TV manufacturers continue to increase the production of panels and the development of new technologies that will set their products apart from the rest. Add to this, the trend of mergers and alliances among manufacturers gains momentum in order to reduce the burden of fresh investments.
