Measuring Journal Usage: Add a Survey to the Statistics?

Journal usage statistics are important for collection development and budget justifications; but cold numbers do not necessarily tell us who is using our services and how they feel about the library. Librarians invest a great deal of time and effort in maintaining an online full-text journal collection. Who is using them, and how and why? A brief e-mail survey can enhance the statistical data and lead to a better understanding of what the library's clientele use and need.
