Some time ago, I sent out an informal questionnaire through the ATTW website asking for information regarding institutional support of scholarly activities. The questionnaire was not intended as a means for conducting a thorough analysis of the topic, merely a snapshot of then-current values placed upon scholarship, conference travel, etc., determined by the level of financial support given to those activities by the institutions for which we work. And then the stock market dropped by over 50%; so in the ensuing months, 1 have deliberated whether or not any of this information has value or interest at all, and finally decided that it does, only that the realities today are probably considerably worse.
