摘要

The history of our discipline is important, not only to the academic scholars who research and compile it, but to the practitioners who create it. As the research and publications of JTWC Editorial Editor, Elizabeth Tebeaux, reveal, ours is an ancient discipline, extending at least back into the late Middle Ages, and undoubtedly much beyond that if we take into account such things as Roman civil documents, Greek political treatises, even Sumerian cuneiform tablets that account for the day-to-day life in the world's first city state. Yet, often, relatively recent technical communication history eludes us. Early in the life of this Journal, founding editor Jay R. Gould incorporated a regular feature that he called "Meet the Professionals." This was a collection of short biographies of the men-and women-who developed modern technical communication as an enterprise and a discipline during and following World War Ⅱ. One can learn a great deal about early modern technical communication simply by going online (www.baywood.com) and exploring these segments during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
