摘要

Over the past decade the paths of cataloging education and employer expectations have seriously diverged. The perception by many library managers is that library and information science (LIS) educators are not giving their students the tools and skills necessary for entry-level cataloging positions. To substantiate and come to grips with that disconnect, the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services' (ALCTS) Committee on Education, Training and Recruitment for Cataloging (CETRC) presented a one-day preconference at the 2007 American Library Association's annual meeting in Washington, DC, entitled "What They Don't Teach in Library School: Competencies, Education and Employer Expectations for a Career in Cataloging." The guest editors of this issue of the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science are very pleased to present the following articles on library and information science education inspired by that preconference.
