I am writing this editorial in Aucklandrnairport as I prepare for a flight to Australia.rnI am logged into the free wifi andrnam working as if I was in my office inrnthe South Island of New Zealand. WhenrnI get to Australia I will continue to workrnremotely in the same way. Many of thernstudents we teach are, likewise, mobilernand accessing their course materials whilernthey are ‘on the move’. And if they arernnot physically moving they are technologicallyrnmobile as they access a range ofrnplatforms simultaneously. While they arern‘in class’ they are checking status updatesrnon Facebook, texting and tweeting, visitingrnYouTube for the latest cat video andrnmany are rocking the baby at the samerntime. These multitasking lives presentrnconsiderable pedagogical challenges forrnthose of us who teach online. Developingrncurriculum that is rich and engaging, andrnhas the capacity to keep students in class,rnwith their focus on the course materials, isrndefinitely a work in progress. Many of thernauthors in this edition of JELIS are reportingrntheir work to that end. The papers arernpersonal. They reflect the way that thesernauthors are grappling with teaching in thernonline world and ways to solve some ofrnthe dilemmas they have encountered. Thernpapers are fresh and innovative but haverna sense of ‘how can we do this better’rnabout the writing. They are indeed actionrnresearch. There are four papers with thisrntheme in JELIS 57 (4) 2016.
