There is a certain symmetry in beingasked to write a commentary on JesseShera’s summer 1969 JEL article abouthigher education because he wrote theforeword to my own history of educationfor librarianship at the University of Chicagoentitled The Spirit of Inquiry (Chicago:ALA, 1981). It came about in thefollowing way.
