TOXIC AND SUBLETHAL EFFECTS OF DETERGENTS ON THE FRESHWATER FISH OREOCHROMIS MOSSAMBICUS

Effect of detergents on survival and feeding energetics of Oreochromis mossambicus was studied testing at different concentrations. It was found that 60 and 180 mgl~(-1) were sublethal and lethal in 96 h exposure, respectively. Concentration of 120 mgl~(-1) was found as median lethal concentration at 96 h exposure for group I detergents. Rearing the fish in different group of detergents, it was found that the feeding rate decreased from 58.25 mg g~(-1) d~(-1) (control) to 25.70, 31.59 and 32.79 mg g~(-1) d~(-1) when individuals reared in media containing groupⅠ(low price detergents), groupⅡ(moderate price detergents) and groupⅢ(high price detergents) respectively. Growth rate was drastically reduced.
