Laboratory incubation experiments were conducted to assess the azo reductase enzyme activity of dye effluent decolourising micro organisms. The bacterial cultures were isolated from dye factory effluent irrigated soil and ascertained for decolourisation. The azo reductase enzyme activity was also assessed. Among the cultures used, Bacillus sp ( C_1) and Pseudomonas sp (C_3) performed better. The reason for the efficiency of these two strains was due to their higher growth rate in the effluent and higher azo reductase activity (R~2 = 0.9 for Bacillus sp.-1 (C_1)and 0.79 for Pseudomonas sp.( C_3)).
