INFLUENCE OF RESISTANT GENOTYPES ON BIOLOGY OF RICE LEAF FOLDER COMPLEX

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the biology of rice leaf folder species complex viz.. Cnaphalocrocis meclinalis (Guenee), Marasmia patnalis (Bradley) and M. ruralis (Walker) on resistant genotypes such as ASD 7, AS 89044, ARC 11281, ARC 11128, Balam. Choorapundy. Darukasail, Gorsa, MDU3, Ptb 12, Valaipoosamba, W 1263 and White Ponni with the susceptible check IR 20. Prolonged larval period and pupal period were noticed on the resistant genotypes such as Valaipoosamba and TNAU LFR 831311 of the rice leaf folder Cnaphalocrocis medinalis. For the leaf folder M. ruralis, the observation on oviposition period recorded the maximum days on W1263 (5.2 days) followed by White Ponni (5 days). Among the resistant genotypes, TNAU LFR 831311 and Valaipoosamba performed well and also exhibited prolonged life period of the leaf folders. With regard to biochemical characters, the total phenol (10.8 mg/g of tissue), OD phenol (5.6 mg/g of tissue) and silica (13.6 mg/g of tissue) content was significantly high in the resistant genotype TNAU LFR 831311. This was on par with resistant genotype Valaipoosamba.
