SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF MANAKUDY ESTUARY, SOUTHWEST COAST OF INDIA

Manakudy is a bar built estuary located in the southwest coast of India, 8 km north of Kanyakumari (lat. 8°2' and 8°4'N and between long. 77°26' and 77°30'E). The sediment characteristics were studied in 6 stations viz SI, S2, S3, S4, S5 & S6 for a period of 12 months (Aug 2005 to July 2006). The percentage composition of sediments showed marked variations in relation to seasons and stations. The sediments were grouped under the following types viz silt, sand, loamy sand, sandy loam, sandy clay, sandy clay loam, silt loam, loam and clay . The organic carbon in the sediments ranged from 1.0% to 5.5%. The average organic carbon in the six stations increased in the order S4
