STATUS OF AMBIENT AIR QUALITY IN TIRUCHIRAPPALLI CITY

Tiruchirappalli is the fourth largest city of Tamil Nadu state. The growing number of vehicles in city poses a serious threat to its air environment. The ambient air quality was monitored for major air pollutants Suspended Paniculate Matter (SPM), Sulphur dioxide (SO_2) and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) with the help high volume air sampler at five traffic areas namely Central bus stand, Chattram bus stand, Puthur, Palakarai and Srirangam of Tiruchirappalli. The highest concentration of SPM, S02 is recorded at Palakarai, while the highest NOx concentrations are recorded at Chattram bus stand. SPM concentrations ranged from 426.9 to 1301.9μg/ m~3 and SO_2 concentrations between 10.1 and 31 .Oμg/ m~3. NO_x concentrations ranged from 49.8 to 182.0μg/ m~3.
