Robert Service, Professor of Russian History at Oxford University, is one of the most prolific scholars of Soviet Russia working today. Among his numerous works on the political history of the Soviet Union, he is best known for his monumental biographies of Lenin (1985-95) and Stalin (2004). In Comrades!, Service tackles the broader history of states, regimes, and movements that have professed themselves to be "Communist" over the past century. This book elegantly synthesizes an immense and global literature, while drawing on new archival evidence to connect the spokes of international communism to the central hub of Soviet political and ideological developments. The resulting book, although not covering any new ground on the economics of communism, makes an important contribution to our understanding of the international dimensions of communist political economy.
