The economic performance of Latin America in the last century and a half has been lacking, in particular relative to its northern neighbors-Canada and the United States-over the same time period. What explains Latin America's relative economic decline? This question has long haunted economists and historians. However, there is yet not an agreed-upon answer.rnA vast amount of economic research has raised to prominence the view that countries' economic performances are largely determined by the institutional arrangements that govern their economies.
