In the face of unsustainable trends, economists often invoke Herbert Stein's famous quip that "If something cannot go on forever, it will stop." But the Stein dictum begs some questions: How will it stop? And at what cost? In the past decade of rampant financial speculation, unsustainable public and household debt growth, persistent and high current account imbalances, and excessive greenhouse gas emissions, economics has offered few compelling answers to these questions.
