There is no shortage of books dealing with the 2007-09 financial crisis and its aftermath. Indeed, in the March 2012 issue of this journal, Andrew Lo reviewed twenty-one such books, whose authors include journalists, academics, and a former Treasury secretary. The crisis has also given rise to an outpouring of research on various aspects of the crisis, a small sampling of which appeared in the Winter 2009 issue of the Journal of Economic Perspectives. But what has been lacking is a panoramic account of the crisis that would be suitable for a generalist, but also include a substantive discussion of the underlying economic issues. Ideally, it would be a book one could give to a college freshman wanting to get up speed on the debacle, the policy responses, and the economic consequences.
