David Audretsch and Erik Lehmann have researched the dynamics of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for many years, especially in the US-German context. In their timely, well-documented and scholarly work, they explain why recent economic performance in Germany has been so remarkable, why the country escaped the Great Recession virtually unscathed, and why it is well-poised to tackle challenges of globalization and digitization of economic life.
