The remarkable growth of finance has been one of the hallmarks of the post-1980 economies. Especially in the last two decades, everything that is related to finance grew to record heights. The size of the financial sector with respect to the rest of the economy, the ratio of total financial assets to production, investment in financial assets by nonfinancial corporations, cross-border movements of money and capital, levels of household borrowing, importance of institutional investors such as pension funds, insurance companies, mutual funds etc.
