In Corporate Pharaohs: A Vicious Circle of Globalization, Richard and June Brinkman address the phenomenon of globalization from an institutional and cultural perspective. The title draws a parallel between the power exerted by corporate CEOs and that used by Egyptian kings. "Our objective is to show the analogous relation between the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt and corporate Pharaohs of modern American culture in their treatment of a given society's economic surplus. Both cases interrelate to the institutional structure in existence, which grants them the power of control at their respective states of economic development and culture evolution" (p. 46). The authors are not anti-capitalist. Rather, they question the institutional structure that reinforces the underlying power relationships.
